About Kerala Heritage Explorer
An independent travel and culture guide dedicated to the most in-depth English-language coverage of Kerala — its history, living traditions, and natural landscapes.
Our Mission
Kerala Heritage Explorer exists to provide visitors, researchers, students, and anyone curious about Kerala with comprehensive, accurate, and original content about one of India's most culturally distinctive regions. We believe that God's Own Country deserves a resource that goes beyond surface-level travel advice and engages seriously with the history, art, cuisine, faith traditions, and ecological landscapes that make Kerala unlike anywhere else in the world.
Our goal is simple: to be the most detailed, thoughtful, and reliable English-language guide to Kerala available online. Every article on this site is written from scratch, drawing on published ethnographic, historical, culinary, and ecological scholarship. We do not syndicate, scrape, or reproduce content from other sources.
What We Cover
Kerala Heritage Explorer covers nine major topic areas, each treated in article-length depth:
- History — from the Sangam-era Chera dynasty and the Roman spice trade at Muziris to the formation of the modern state in 1956 and the "Kerala Model" of development.
- Temples and Sacred Sites — the distinctive architecture of Keralan temples, the treasure-filled vaults of Padmanabhaswamy, the pilgrimage to Sabarimala, and the daily Theyyam rituals of the northern kavus.
- The Backwaters — Vembanad Lake, the Alleppey canals, kettuvallam houseboats, and the ecosystem of a 900-kilometre inland waterway.
- Festivals — Onam's ten-day celebrations, the elephant processions of Thrissur Pooram, Vishu's auspicious dawn, and the ancient ritual calendar of Theyyam.
- Cuisine — breakfast appam and puttu, the 26-dish Onasadya, Malabar fish curry, Syrian Christian beef olathiyathu, and the spice-trail pantry of the Western Ghats.
- Classical and Ritual Art Forms — Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam (a UNESCO Masterpiece), Theyyam, and Kalaripayattu.
- Ayurveda — panchakarma, pizhichil, shirodhara, and the Ashtavaidyan medical families whose clinical lineage spans twelve generations.
- Language, Literature, and Crafts — Malayalam's literary history from the twelfth-century Ramacharitam to Arundhati Roy, kasavu weaving, bell-metal work, and traditional tharavadu architecture.
- Regions — the beach-and-temple south, the backwater-and-hill centre, and the rainforest-and-Theyyam north.
Our Editorial Approach
All content on Kerala Heritage Explorer is original and written with care. Our editorial principles include:
- Depth over breadth — we write fewer articles, but each one is treated at essay length with the nuance the subject deserves.
- Primary sources where possible — our historical articles reference classical texts (the Periplus, Pliny, Sangam poetry) and archaeological evidence (the Pattanam excavations, copper-plate grants).
- Practical accuracy — travel information (temple dress codes, ferry schedules, regional climate) is checked against current conditions.
- Cultural sensitivity — we write about religious and ritual practices with respect and contextual understanding, noting access restrictions where they exist.
- No filler — we do not pad articles with generic travel platitudes. Every paragraph earns its place.
